Following in the Footsteps of The Early Settlers - July 9

Today we began our journey with a long drive. Most of used this opportunity to catch up on our sleep. Along the way, Ms. Anthea got us a special treat... Timbits from Tim Hortons. These were like American donut holes, but came in different flavors like blueberry and banana nut. Yum! Our Ambassadors of the Day are Kerri B. and Alex D. Today our word of the day was RESILIENCE. Our leaders were proud of how well we bounced back from our changes in plans yesterday. :)









We were given special a "wise guides" to Western Canada, and some of us read up and completed activities in the books during the road trip. At last, we arrived for lunch at Pope Lease Pines, the miner's camp where we would be spending the night. We had a delicious chili dinner, and made People to People history by being the first delegation to finish the entire pot!











After lunch, we had the unique opportunity to tour the grounds of a Hutterites Colony. The Huderites date back to 1536, and came to Canada seeking refuge. Lydia, a member of the colony, gave us a tour that included her own home.






















We learned that the Hutterites produce and raise 90% of their food right at the colony. Just about every male is employed at the colony, and the community shares one bank account. Each family is given their own home (like an apartment) within in the colony. Next we visited the Atlas Coal Mine. We heard a few ghost stories and tales from Canada's coal boom.

Next we went to the East Coulee School of 1936 for dinner. This was a living history museum, so we all got to experience a 1936 classroom. Ms. Morrison, our teacher, was scary. Just ask a delegate! Ms. Lee Anne was so bad she got the "strap", and I hear Ms. Kathy and Ms. Tiffany weren't much better!

















Our last stop of the day before checking into the Miner's camp was the Hoodoos in the Drumheller badlands. These sand stone pillars are naturally molded out of canyon rock over several thousands of years, and are said to be "bad children" who ran away from home.





At days end, we journeyed back to our quaint little miner's camp for bed and showers (yay!).
